Ever thought about running a marathon and answer yourself “When pigs fly”. Well, out in Cincinnati the pigs fly every year (the first Sunday in May to be exact). Here is your chance to check off a marathon (or another race distance) on your life’s list and also give back to the preemie community. We are looking for people who are interested in running the Flying Pig marathon, half marathon, 4-person relay, 10k, or 5k on May 5, 2013. So whether you are coming off the couch or have been running for awhile there is a distance just for you!
If you are interested in running for Graham’s Foundation but don’t live in the Cincinnati area – no sweat, you can run a race of your choosing in any city at any time!
Need some help raising money and getting to the finish? NO PROBLEM! We are also looking to set up a virtual running support group. So whether you are a novice or a pro, have only run to get out of the rain, or run everyday rain or shine, the support group will be there for you with tips, suggestions, motivation, and inspiration – all from people who want you to get to the finish line while giving back to the preemie community.
Last November I ran the Philadelphia Marathon, while raising funds for Graham’s Foundation. Although that was my eighth marathon, it was my first since having my daughter, a 23-week micro-preemie. It wasn’t easy finding the time to train for that marathon as my previous ones (a toddler will do that to you ). However, just seeing her smile reminded me of why I had chosen to run the marathon and that got my feet out the door. During each long run I remembered my daughter’s struggles in the NICU and those kept me running the longer miles. It was my daughter’s strength through all of her surgeries, blood draws, x-rays, and specialist appointments that drove me to the finish line on race day.
So many people have excuses of why NOT to run or give back, but as a parent, family member or friend who has gone through the struggles of having and/or losing a child who was born premature WHY NOT run to help other families?
This is your opportunity to give hope, be resilient, and prove miracles do happen!
If we have peaked your interest, made your heart pump a little faster, or just got you thinking this may be something you want to look into further, please contact Andrea Silva at [email protected].
