So this past week we decided we are taking a family vacation to Schlitterbahn at the end of July. I know traveling with any little one is difficult. However I find myself worrying about everything even more so when we travel.
I remember when Dusty first came home, I didn’t want to go anywhere or have anyone over. The first trip we took was to church. I’ve seen those car seat tags that say “please wash your hands. I’m a preemie.” And thought, man, I wish I had that when Dusty was little.
The first time we let anyone come over I think was like a week after he had been home. Okay. So yeah I was a lot of paranoid. Now that he’s almost two I still watch out for him but I’m not so panicked about it.
How long did you wait to go somewhere with your preemie? How long did you wait to let people come over?
With summer starting, everyone is taking family vacations. I’m one of those that makes a list for each person in our family and what they need to pack. This is just so I can make sure we don’t forget a thing.
Dusty list is usually like triple our list. I make sure we have all the clothes he could possibly need, at least 2 sippie cups, snacks, blankets, playpen, toys, allergy medicine, hypoallergenic sunscreen, all natural bug spray, swim suit and floaters, diapers to last way longer than we could every be gone, shoes and sandals, and everything else. The sad part is when he was smaller this list was so much longer.
What do you pack when you travel with your preemie? How has the list changed over time?
So far the furthest we’ve ever gone was to Colorado and Dusty was about 6 months old. My husband drove himself, my best friend, brother, and Dusty on a 16-hour car drive. Most experts recommend that as soon as you have a correctly sized car seat – check out this link to check your car seat size – you should be able to travel most anywhere. We have yet to brave the world of flying with our little one but we will eventually. Driving with a preemie of any age is crazy enough for us right now. 🙂
